Nestled in the heart of the Coombsville AVA (American Viticultural Area) you will find Shadybrook Estate where breathtaking views of the Valley below and neighboring hillsides abound. Our estate spans twenty-five hillside acres with the contiguous north, south and west vineyards carved as a bowl within the hills of Coombsville presenting an intertwined tapestry of swales rolling through our fifteen planted acres. The vineyard’s diverse topography offers a complex blend of several microclimates and exposures with countless variations in soil composition and depth.
The unique personality of the vineyard – and its many blocks within – affords us the rare opportunity of precisely matching our terroir to five individual clones of Cabernet Sauvignon along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.
Our passionate winemaking and viticultural team of Winemaker Rudy Zuidema, Viticulturalist Tom Prentice and Vineyard Manager Mario Bazán work together throughout the year to ensure the health of the soils and vines ensuring Shadybrook Estate wines will exemplify extreme balance, elegance, complexity, minerality and depth.
We farm sustainably using both organic and biodynamic practices to reach our goal of perfect balance between fruit and vine vigor matching the intricacies of each growing season. Each individual slope and block is farmed as though it were a single vineyard to maximize diversity and deliver a broad range of flavors and bouquet enhancing the individual character and breed of the finished wine.
Our vines struggle a bit more at the crown of each swale with their thinner soil depth and very rocky sub-soil. As the vines descend the swale to the base the soils are progressively deeper causing a bit less stress and producing more supple fruit. To take advantage of the subtle differences in the vineyard blocks we have chosen to harvest and farm the various areas of the rolling hillside and swales individually in order to encourage optimal ripeness of each block and ensure development of the broad range of individual vinous components our vineyard is capable of creating.
